Friday 18th June - Cape Town

Unable to continue following England's progress from the saddle of my bicycle owing to the distance between fixtures it was gutting to fly into Cape Town earlier this week although it made a pleasant change to arrive somewhere for once without a sore bum, ravenous hunger and nostril assaulting odour following my every move. My South African side of the family certainly appreciated that fact and provided a wonderful reception including an incredible surprise party on Tuesday night. I think the journey here has turned me into a bit of a girl as not for the first time in the last 8 months I was reduced to tears thanks to the wonderful turn out of family and friends, a brilliant slide show of the trip produced by Duncan and some touching speeches. Special thanks to everyone who came along and particularly to my close family for all the organising and always being there for me even through the bearded days!! It was a moving and special night that I will never forget.

The atmosphere here remains electric despite Bafana's disappointing result and everything is building towards the hugely important game tonight. I have now been joined by friends Rick & Chris and we're just donning our England gear before heading down to the Fan Fest and on to the game later this evening. I don't think my emotions could handle any further surprises this week so let’s hope Algeria don't come to the party!

Hey Rob it was great to see you in Cape Town. Sorry about the match result here, but at least amends were made in Port Elizabeth and you get to stay on with honour intact! Your photos from Botswana are brilliant! Did the wildebees get unstuck - will it survive? Glad you weren't on your bike with the lions! Now your fantastic trek is over you are going to have to start looking for a life after the World Cup! Bike mechanic, photographer, UN peacekeeper all spring to mind? I hope you finish the trip with success on the soccer field. The atmosphere before and during the England/Algeria game here was unforgettable! See you.

Drawn-out results

Great to read about your welcome party in Cape Town, and look forward to seeing any pictures of the celebrations.  In the interim, the beautiful game is gathering a host of new fans in this corner of the Pacific!!
