> Elephant crossing
Day 209 – Tues 27 April - 17,748km, Makgadikgadi National Park, Botswana
Attempting to start the day with a marathon my thighs felt like they’d done 12 rounds with Mike Tyson after only 27 km and I had to resort to walking the rest of the distance until James met me with Bertha and I was able to ride on for another 100 km. Cycling between two National Parks, I was in for a treat as a massive bull elephant crossed the road in front of me and I was able to take an amazing time out on foot watching him drink from a water hole. Luckily I was downwind because there would have been no escaping on my dead legs! Conveniently James is doing his Phd research on zebra migration in the Makgadikgadi National Park and I’ve volunteered to be his not so glamorous assistant, so we’ve got a couple of days collecting Zebra pooh, tracking and camping wild lined up. PS. Unfortunately the flight over the delta was full, but judging by the way the pilots were enjoying their beer the night before, it might have been for the best!
