> Fancy a beer?

Wednesday, 10 February 2010 - 11:11

Day 132 – Tuesday 9 February – 12218km, Yaounde, Cameroon

Beer consumption in Cameroon is incredibly high, which is perhaps not surprising given that beer is as cheap as soft drinks costing around 80p for a 660ml bottle, and we spent a fascinating morning touring the local brewery and Coke bottler. After some essential taste testing, I then spent 4 frustrating hours waiting outside the Gabon embassy to receive my ‘express’ visa. Eventually getting my passport back, I returned to the hotel as it was getting dark to find my crazy Brazilian amigo still keen to do some cycling. Digging out head torches we set off on an exhilarating ride through the mayhem of Yaounde’s rush hour traffic as dark descended. Getting to the edge of town in darkness, we lined up a budget motel for the night & readily sought out a couple of those cheap Cameroon beers to enjoy while we reflected on the night’s near misses.
